Why buy art on eBay?
The simplest reason to purchase art on eBay is that it is easy and
compared to purchasing from a gallery it will be cheaper and unpretentious. EBay is open 24
hours a day 7 days a
week - you can purchase art anytime you wish - even Christmas day if you are
bored! You do not have to interact with a (possibly intimidating) gallery
representative. If you know nothing about art but want to buy what you know you
like, you will not be made to feel stupid. You will most probably be purchasing
direct from the artist so you will not be paying the gallery commission (often
at least 50% of the price) and the artist will receive all the profit from their
work. Dealing direct with the artist has other benefits, you can directly ask
them about their inspiration, technique or materials. Ask to join their mailing
list or enquire about commissions.
There are thousands of art auctions on eBay at any one
time. You will find thousands of styles in every medium and on every type of
support possible. You will be able to find every thing from intricate drawings
of dragons, fairies and other fantasy creatures, sensitively painted
watercolours of cats, dogs and other pets. Bright, bold abstracts on modern box
canvases, peaceful seascapes or contemporary and traditional landscapes.
Generally you will pay less for a piece of art on eBay
than you would pay in a gallery - remember gallery prices are usually made up of
commission for the gallery and often this is at least 50% of the final price.
You will definitely be paying less than you would in a gallery.
Once you have found something you like you can place a
bid and at the end of the auction (the longest auctions run 10 days) you will
hopefully have won. If you get 'out bid' by another eBay user you will be
notified by email (or text message to your phone) and you can bid again. Many
auctions are also listed with the instant 'buy it now' option using this you can
purchase your chosen painting instantly. Payment can be made easily online (or
you can send a cheque or postal order) and the painting will be delivered
straight to your door by courier or post.
EBay is a wonderful way to collect paintings, I hope you
give it a go and remember to have fun!
